Why the Bilingual Extension? These courses ensure that as a BEP student, you obtain the required knowledge, understanding, and skills in the following areas: Theories of bilingual education and bilingualism; Multicultural perspectives in education; Sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics Methods of teaching English language arts to bilingual English language learners, including literacy, using the native language and English; Methods of teaching native language arts to bilingual English language learners, including literacy, using the native language and English; and Methods of teaching other content appropriate to the teaching certificate to bilingual English language learners, using the native language and English.

The Bilingual Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology allows graduate students to specialize in evidence-based methods of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bilingual children and adults with speech, language, and hearing impairments. Students who earn this certificate will demonstrate knowledge of how the structure of common languages spoken in the United States compares and contrasts with English, how to appropriately assess and treat all languages in the bilingual or multilingual individual, how to train and implement the use of interpreters, and cultural awareness and sensitivity in the clinical setting.

The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The University of Arizona offers graduate education regarding the science of human communication and disorders, training for clinical careers in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and preparation for research careers in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

Our faculty members are active researchers, dynamic classroom instructors, and leaders in the profession. Students learn foundational knowledge, cutting-edge research findings, and evidence-based practice in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. This provides access to resources for many, but not all, languages in which our student clinicians may wish to practice.
