It detected 81 percent of our inactive adware samples and all ten actively running adware samples, and it successfully removed the files and Registry entries of almost all of the active adware samples. With spyware, however, Spyware Doctor spotted only 27 percent of our inactive banking-related spyware specimens and 43 percent of password-stealing spyware.
It detected all of our active spyware samples except the password-stealing Trojan PSW. From here you can launch scans or make any necessary configuration changes. Many antivirus products offer a fully-functional time-limited trial, but Spyware Doctor's evaluation mode specifically warns that it offers limited security.
From this tab you can launch a quick scan for active malware, a full scan of the entire PC, or a custom scan. Choosing custom scan lets you choose any or all of thirteen specific scan tools.
When the scan finishes it displays all found threats, identifying each with a threat level indicator. You can drill down to see exactly what file and Registry traces are associated with each threat. On several of the malware-infested test systems Spyware Doctor asked permission to reboot and scan again.
In one case it did this twice before declaring itself finished. Spyware Doctor comes with several support tools to handle malware that doesn't yield to its regular scanner. I had to use most of them in testing. Not all reviews have been positive and early versions of Spyware Doctor 5.
